Town of Carrickmacross

Carrickmacross is a wonderful market town. It is developed around a Castle built by the Earl of Essex in 1630. This town had own the prestigious European Entente Florale Silver Medal Award. The Convent of St. Louis Nuns now stands on the original castle site. The Nuns were largely responsible for the revival of lace-making skills in the region. Lace Co-operative has been instrumental in keeping the tradition alive today. The lace is available at The Gallery Centre where demonstrations of this skill given by prior request.

There are explicit buildings like Roman Catholic Church, St Finbarr’s Protestant Church (18th c ) with its magnificent steeple, the Courthouse and the historic Magheross Church reveal the beauty of this town. The most imposing building is the Roman Catholic Church. It was completed in 1866. The ten beautiful stained-glass windows of the church have a particular significance. The renowned artist Harry Clarke designed it in 1925. There is Equestrian Centre in Carrickmacross. It is just 1 km from the town. It offers lessons or hacks about some of Monaghan’s most exceptional woodland and countryside. Nuremore Golf and Country Club, a championship 18-hole course, are well worth a stop-over for the golfing enthusiasts.
