History of Monaghan

Monaghan HotelsThe name Monaghan (Hotels, Monaghan, Ireland) is derived from the Irish-Gaelic word, Muineachan, meaning place of the small thicket hills. The ancient territorial order of Ireland finds present day Monaghan as once belonging to the Kingdom of Oriel, also referred to as McMahons country, after the leading clan. The McMahons and their confederate clans remained in control even after the Norman conquest of Ireland.

Rule of Monaghan was transferred over to the British in 1589. Scottish and English settlers were moved in.

Town of Carrickmacross

Carrickmacross is a wonderful market town. It is developed around a Castle built by the Earl of Essex in 1630. This town had own the prestigious European Entente Florale Silver Medal Award. The Convent of St. Louis Nuns now stands on the original castle site. The Nuns were largely responsible for the revival of lace-making skills in the region. Lace Co-operative has been instrumental in keeping the tradition alive today. The lace is available at The Gallery Centre where demonstrations of this skill given by prior request.
