Monaghan (Holiday Cottages, Monaghan, Ireland), a county of Ireland, province of Ulster, bounded N by Tyrone, E by Armagh, and SE by East Meath and Louth, 30 m. long, and 19 broad, and containing 288,500 English acres, or 450 square miles, divided into 21 parishes. This county contains 184 lakes, of which 30 are considerable sheets of water. Although a part of Ulster, the county was not included in the great Plantation, which began in 1610. It was only after the failure of the rebellion against Cromwell later in the century, and the subsequent confiscations, that some settlement by the English and the Scots took place.

By 1961, there were only 47,000 inhabitants left, less than a quarter of the total 120 years before.
